Skin Redness Facts

The flushing occurs as a consequence of a transient vasodilatation of blood vessels local and temporal causes an increment of circulating volume of blood vessels in the area. The highest density of distribution of capillaries in the area and provides the most superficial blood vessels (the content) are more visible through the skin.

The areas most commonly redness appears:
Face
Neck
Cleavage
Epigastrium

At its onset is influenced by factors that are related to neurological function and the release of vasoactive substances in the area. The neurological control occurs predominantly local produce vasodilatation but also vasoconstriction. In addition, the autonomic nervous system also controls the secretion of the endocrine glands of the skin so it is common for local vasodilatation that occurs with facial redness associated go a simultaneous increase in sweating in the aeries.

There are several causes of this type of redness. Those associated with cutaneous or systemic disease:
Photosensitivity reactions,
Seborrhea dermatitis,
Skin reactions to drugs,
Systemic diseases such as lupus erythematosus,
Hyperthyroidism,
Characinoid syndrome,
Rosacea,
Eczema,
Psoriasis,
Irritant contact dermatitis, and
Others.

The so-called “blushing” that are related to a strong emotional response, sometimes no precipitating factor and is more common in fair-skinned patients. This redness occurs suddenly and is sometimes accompanied by warmth, tingling or dizziness. It relates to feelings of shame but it’s actually blushing that produces the feeling of shame. May eventually develop into a major resort on the patient, as the redness ends up affecting their social relations, avoidance behavior and anxiety cases.

The facial redness can be treated by:

Cosmetic treatments

Cosmetic-based anti-inflammatory function, such as calculating (aloe Vera) or bisabolol, protective barrier function (mucopolysaccharides present in aloe Vera and prickly pear), polyphenols (green tea oil, evening primrose oil, ginko biloba) and moisturizers (Allantoin). Today there is no cosmetic powerful vasoconstrictor that could slow the reaction of vasodilatation.

Laser

There are several teams producing laser photocoagulation of dilated capillaries and thereby remove a portion or the entire problem. Everything depends on the etiologic mechanism of redness. Facial telangiectasias or dilated a great way to respond in one or two sessions. Rosacea can significantly improve and diffuse dilatation of all superficial dermal plexus as well.

The treatment has been going on for years with pulsed dye laser at 595 nm with efficiency important. But technology has advanced and now in addition to IML have neodymium-YAG laser and KTP (1064 and 532 Nm) and second-generation pulsed light.

These technological resources to select the most effective type of laser, depending on the caliber of the vessels to be treated, the thickness of the skin (which is conditioned by the sex of the patient) and anatomical location. These new technologies with pulse durations longer prevent the effect of transient purpura (bruising time the size of laser shots) was necessarily associated with the first treatments were done by laser.

It is a dermatologist experienced in the management of this technology must define the most effective treatment and seek treatment for common diseases that are associated with this problem.

Patients with emotional flushing can benefit from video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy. Surgical treatment is the same as that used for hyperhidrosis, consisting of a surgical termination of nerve conduction of the sympathetic nerve chain (sympathicotomy).
