Cellulitis Infection Symptoms and Treatment Facts
Cellulitis is a disease that infects the skin and is caused by bacteria .The bacteria can enter the skin if one has a sore or cut on the skin.
There are some people who can contract cellulitis even if they don’t have cuts or sore on their skins .These are mainly individuals suffering from diabetes or with an immune system that is very weak.
Those who handle poultry, meat or soil without using gloves are also at a risk of getting this disease. Cellulitis mostly affects the skin on an individual’s face or lower legs.
Common symptoms of cellulitis include the following: Developing of large blisters on various parts of the skin. The general feeling of being unwell. Fever: This mainly happens if the condition spreads to other body parts via blood. Pus or fluid: This may drain or leak from the skin on various spots. The skin may become red streaked or have redness in broad areas. Lymph nodes may become tender or swollen especially near the areas that are affected.
Common Treatment of Cellulitis
The aim of cellulitis treatment is to reduce the severity of the disease , help relieve pain as well as symptoms , heal an individual’s skin and prevent one from being infected in the future .Treatment of cellulitis involves resting the areas that are affected , use of antibiotics and cutting away tissue that is dead.
Antibiotics are in most cases used to treat this disease. They can be taken orally if only a small area has been infected, the infection has not spread to the lymph system or the bloodstream and if the individual has no other medical complications.
Antibiotics can be administered by use of injection if the area infected is wide or one is slowly recovering having taken oral antibiotics. For cellulitis of the arm or leg, the limb may be elevated so as to reduce swelling.
Mild cellulitis can be treated by use of dicloxallian or flucloxacillin monotherapy. In moderate situations or when an infection of streptococcal is detected, dicloxallian monotherapy is combined with benzypenicillin that is administered by use of injections or phenoxymethylpenicillin that is administered orally.
Doctors may also prescribe medicine for pain relief .Too much pain should be investigated because it is a symptom of necrotizing fasciitis. It is important for elevation of the area that is affected .Just like most maladies that are characterized by destruction of wounds or tissues, it may be appropriate to use hyperbaric oxygen treatment as a therapy. This however is not easily available.
Children are treated differently depending on their age as well as the body parts that are infected. Antibiotics are usually administered intravenously .Young children who have facial cellulitis may require to be treated immediately. Antibiotics can be very effective in such a case.
Treatment may sometimes require one to stay in the hospital .This is the norm if antibiotics are given intravenously. It may also require one to stay in hospital if it is hard to have after treatment care or if they have symptoms of complications.
